I started off listening to classical music when I was little (about 6 or 7) and the beatles when I was 9. the band that got me into the kind of music I listen to now was stabbing westward, and I first heard them when I was about 14.
My early years were very sheltered: two tv channels, only country or gospel radio stations came in well, my family and the area I grew up in is far from current, and my folks were really good at keeping tabs on my entertainment influences. As a result, the first two cassettes I ever bought with my own money were "Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em" and "Appetite for Destruction." Guess which one got the most mileage. I remember a time when I thought Led Zeppelin sucked balls, but after GNR showed me the beauty of loud electric instruments the flood gates opened and I discovered a whole new world. I borrowed tapes from friends and made copies, everything from Anthrax and Aerosmith to Zappa and ZZ Top. Hendrix, Helix, Joan Jett, Frampton, Muddy Waters, Billy Joel. I couldn't get enough, and from reading countless articles and interviews I learned about the people who influenced my favorite artists and tracked them down, too. My wife laughs because I occasionally pull out one of my old mixed tapes and there'll be anything from heavy metal to blues to classical and occasionally even rap and bluegrass, all on the same tape! I always return to the roots of my awakening, and "Abracadabra" gets put back in favor of "GNR Lies." In fact,I think I'll put that in right now.

Now that I think about it, I still haven't ever gotten around to picking up their very first albumn. Wither, Blister, Burn + Peel was great and still gets spinnage. I was saw them at a show with Sevendust, that was great. (Also Candlebox, Fuel, Lollipop Lust Kill, Gravity Kills, and Kid Rock LOL).Quote:

Kinda tough, hmm...
I grew up in the 80's, there was plenty of MTV, but I had to endure my sister's horrid Air Supply LP at times. Parents always played oldies. The Beatles' White Album made it in there at least. Oddly found Leonard Cohen's "Road to Hell" on a weird radio station one night.
From there Classic rock became my first big thing- Doors, Jimi, Floyd, Zepplin, Cream, S&G, etc. (and some metal bands too)
This would expand into the early 90's with Tom Waits, many of the Seattle groups, Mazzy Star, etc. and from then on I kept branching out into more diverse stuff.
I liked all music when I was a kid, and still do, but my step dad always listened to lots of Van Morrison, and I'd say that was the first to really hit me as "great" music. http://www.hostboard.com/forums/
I'd say the Beatles, though they were still a part of my childhood (my mom was an original Beatlemaniac). Besides them, it would be Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers...
